Sam Altman: AI Is Integrated. Superintelligence Is Coming.
In a recent interview with Bari Weiss at the Free Press, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and creator of ChatGPT technologies, shared his thoughts on the rapid adoption and integration of artificial intelligence in our daily lives. According to Altman, the rate at which people are adopting AI is unprecedented, with even he himself changing his default search engine to ChatGPT.
One of the most striking aspects of the interview was Altman’s emphasis on the role of humanity in the age of AI. He stressed that while technology will undoubtedly change the world, it won’t alter fundamental human drives. Instead, society will shift and adapt to this new landscape, allowing us to focus on playing positive-sum games.
In his September manifesto, Altman wrote about the importance of recognizing humanity’s innate desire to create and be useful to one another. He argued that AI will enable us to amplify our abilities like never before, ultimately leading to an expanding world where we can thrive.
Altman also cautioned against nostalgia for the past, pointing out that jobs we now consider vital would have been viewed as trivial a few hundred years ago. He used the example of a lamplighter, who would likely be astonished by the prosperity around him if he were transported forward in time. Similarly, we should not look back at the past and wish we had stuck to outdated ways of doing things.
While some may worry about job displacement, Altman’s vision is one of hope and opportunity. He envisions a future where AI and robots allow us to focus on higher-level tasks that bring value to society.
