
A frantic search effort has been called off after a 51-year-old passenger reportedly went overboard from the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic while it was en route to Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. The man, who was traveling with his family, went missing at approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
According to the cruise line, authorities were promptly notified and an immediate search and rescue effort was launched. Despite an extensive search, the passenger’s whereabouts are still unknown.
The Norwegian Epic, which was built in 2010 and refurbished in 2020, is a massive ship with 19 decks that can accommodate up to 4,070 passengers at double occupancy. It has over 1,700 crew members on board.
The incident occurred during a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage that departed from Port Canaveral, Florida on December 21st and was expected to return on December 28th.
It is unclear what may have caused the passenger to go overboard, but an investigation is currently underway.
