Title: Animoca Brands’ Exec Explains How His X Account Was Hacked Despite 2FA
Animoca Brands has recently been in the news following a hacking incident involving one of its executives, Yat Siu. The co-founder and chair of the company had his X account compromised, with an unauthorized user using it to promote a fraudulent token on Solana’s Pump.fun platform.
In a recent statement, Siu explained how the hack occurred despite having two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled on his account. According to Siu, the hacker managed to obtain his password and then used the account recovery page to bypass 2FA by submitting a request with an unregistered email address. This allowed them to gain access to his account without triggering any alerts or notifications.
Siu emphasized that this security gap could have been avoided if the system had provided critical action notifications, such as changes to two-factor authentication settings. He urged X to implement stronger notifications for sensitive actions and recommended better verification measures to protect accounts.
Moreover, Siu warned users against relying solely on 2FA for account security. Instead, he stressed the importance of maintaining strong password hygiene, noting that hackers can bypass 2FA once they have gained access to a user’s password.
