Apple Cancels iPhone 14 And iPhone SE For Millions Of Users
In a surprise move, Apple has announced the cancellation of its iPhone 14 and iPhone SE models for millions of users worldwide. The decision comes as the result of an EU directive requiring all electronic devices to use USB-C charging ports instead of Lightning connectors.
According to sources close to the matter, Apple resisted this change initially, citing concerns that it could stifle creativity. However, the company ultimately acquiesced and moved its iPhones to USB-C with the iPhone 15 onwards.
This sudden move has left many users feeling caught off guard and scrambling to find alternatives. The iPhone range had three models that remained in use, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE. However, as of December 28th, these devices are no longer available for purchase on Apple’s website.
But fear not, there is a glimmer of hope. Third-party resellers are still allowed to sell remaining stocks of the discontinued iPhones, so you can still grab one from Amazon or other online retailers.
However, this ban reaches further than just Europe. Switzerland has also aligned itself with the EU directive, and as such, sales of these devices have been suspended in that country too. And for those living in Northern Ireland, you’ll be sorry to hear that the ban applies there as well due to trading agreements with the Republic of Ireland.
But what about other countries? While the ripple effects will be minimal, it’s unlikely that any similar legislation would take effect before the iPhone 14 is officially retired, which is expected to happen later this year.
In related news, Apple has announced that sales of the iPhone SE are likely on the decline due to the impending release of a new model in Spring 2025.
