Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen Quits Championship Tournament Over Pair of Jeans: “I’m Out, F— You”
World chess champion Magnus Carlsen has abruptly quit the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship after being denied permission to continue competing in his jeans. The Norwegian grandmaster made the shocking decision following a heated dispute with tournament organizers over his attire.
According to reports, Carlsen was initially allowed to participate in the event despite wearing casual jeans, but later found himself facing criticism for not adhering to the official dress code. When asked if he could continue on and abide by the dress code the following day, Carlsen responded that FIDE declined, stating he would not be paired if he didn’t change after his round.
At this point, Carlsen said it became a matter of principle for him, ultimately deciding to leave the tournament altogether. “Honestly, I’m too old at this point to care too much,” he told Take Take Take in an interview. “If this is what they want to do – I guess it goes both ways, right? Nobody wants to back down, and this is where we are. It’s fine by me. I’ll probably head off to somewhere where the weather is a bit nicer than here.”
The sudden turn of events has left many in the chess community stunned, with some critics accusing Carlsen of being unprofessional. However, he remains steadfast in his decision, stating that it’s no longer worth continuing under FIDE’s strict rules.
FIDE, on the other hand, doubled down on their stance, emphasizing that the dress code regulations have been in place for years and are well-known to all participants.
