Apple Cancels iPhone 14 And iPhone SE For Millions Of Users
In a surprise move, Apple has announced the cancellation of its iPhone 14 and iPhone SE models for millions of users worldwide. The decision comes as a result of an EU directive aimed at reducing electronic waste by mandating the use of USB-C charging ports on all devices, effective December 28, 2024.
The affected phones are the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE (3rd generation), which will no longer be available for purchase through official Apple channels. However, third-party resellers have already listed remaining stocks online, including Amazon in Spain.
The ban extends beyond the EU to Switzerland, as it aligns with the bloc’s regulations. The UK has also been impacted, despite leaving the European Union in 2020, due to Northern Ireland’s unique trading rules designed to maintain a borderless region between Ireland and Britain.
As sales of the iPhone SE are expected to decline with the upcoming release of a new model in Spring 2025, this unexpected move may cause inconvenience for some users. Nevertheless, Apple has taken decisive action to comply with EU regulations.
While the effects on other countries’ markets may be minimal, it is uncertain whether legislation will be introduced swiftly enough to affect the iPhone 14’s retirement, which is expected to occur in the fall of this year.
