Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen Quits Championship Tournament Over Pair of Jeans: ‘I’m Out, F— You’
In a shocking turn of events, chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has dropped out of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship after being refused permission to continue playing in his jeans.
Carlsen, one of the greatest chess players of all time, arrived at the tournament on Saturday wearing a pair of jeans that didn’t meet the event’s dress code. According to reports, he was informed by the organizers that he wouldn’t be paired if he didn’t change after his round, and Carlsen responded by saying “I’m out, f— you” before deciding to withdraw from the competition.
The incident has sparked controversy, with many questioning whether FIDE’s decision to enforce its dress code rules was justified. Despite this, the organization has doubled down on its stance, citing the need for consistency in its rules and the fact that another participant had been given a similar warning earlier in the tournament for wearing “sports shoes.”
Carlsen, who is 31 years old, expressed his frustration with the situation, stating that he was not interested in continuing on in the tournament. When asked if he could continue playing while abiding by the dress code, Carlsen said FIDE declined and told him he would not be paired unless he changed.
At that point, it became a matter of principle for me,” he explained.
Carlsen has been embroiled in controversy before, but this incident highlights the tension between the world chess community and its governing body. The Norwegian grandmaster is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, having held the number one spot on the FIDE ranking list since 2013.
Despite his impressive record, Carlsen has been at odds with FIDE in the past over issues related to player welfare and tournament organization.
