Microsoft Warns Millions Of Windows Users—Do Not Install This Update On Your PC
In a startling warning, Microsoft has cautioned millions of its users to avoid installing a specific update on their PCs. The software giant has revealed that the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates can cause catastrophic consequences if installed via USB flash drives or CD media.
According to Microsoft’s documentation, attempting to install Windows 11 version 24H2 with these updates will leave devices in a state where they cannot accept further Windows security updates. This issue only arises when using external media to install the OS, and does not affect those who update their PCs via Windows Update.
The problem has been attributed to the way users might create their Windows 11 external media copy to install the OS with newer updates. Microsoft is currently working on a permanent fix for this issue, but in the meantime, users have been advised to avoid installing these updates altogether.
“We are aware of these reports and they only affect a very small number of PCs,” a statement from Microsoft read.
However, despite initial estimates suggesting only a few users would be impacted, it appears that millions of Windows 11 24H2 installations could potentially be affected. This has added to the already tumultuous situation surrounding Windows 11, which is struggling to gain traction among users due to various update and upgrade issues in recent weeks.
The issue highlights the importance of vigilance when updating one’s operating system. It serves as a stark reminder that even well-established technology companies like Microsoft can make mistakes, and users must always be cautious when installing updates.
In order to rectify this situation, Microsoft recommends that media-based Windows 11 24H2 installations use the December 2024 security update, released on December 10, to avoid encountering subsequent updating problems.
