My Top 10 Japanese Games Of 2024
As we close out 2024, it’s time to reflect on the amazing Japanese games that have been released throughout the year. While there may not have been as many brand-new releases as I would have liked, there were still plenty of fantastic titles to get our teeth stuck into. In this article, I’ll be counting down my top 10 Japanese games of 2024, and while some may disagree with my choices, I hope you can agree that these titles are all well worth your time.
10. Unicorn Overlord
I’m not ashamed to say that I was initially skeptical about ‘Unicorn Overlord,’ but after playing it, I must admit that Vanillaware has truly outdone themselves. This pixel art masterpiece is an absolute blast from start to finish, with a story that’s both dark and humorous.
9. Dragon Quest Builders
The long-awaited PC port of ‘Dragon Quest Builders’ was finally released this year, and while I still prefer the PlayStation 4 and Switch versions, it’s great to see more people have access to this wonderful game. Let me tell you, the quality-of-life improvements made this a worthwhile purchase for many players.
8. Ace Combat 7: Deluxe Edition
If someone had told me that ‘Ace Combat 7’ would be ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2024, I wouldn’t have believed them – yet here we are! And what an incredible job Bandai Namco has done with this new ‘Deluxe Edition.’ Playing on my Switch is a revelation.
7. Metaphor: ReFantazio
While it didn’t make my top 10, I still want to give an honorable mention to ‘Metaphor: ReFantazio,’ which impressed me greatly with its beautiful visuals and addictive gameplay.
6. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
If I hadn’t been so busy playing games for my job, I would have definitely considered picking up this DLC release for ‘Elden Ring.’ As it stands, it’s still an excellent addition to the game, but unfortunately, it can’t crack my top 10.
5. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
I’m not going to get into too much detail about this fantastic remake, as you’ve already seen it in other articles I wrote for Forbes. Let’s just say that Square Enix did an incredible job with this one and I truly believe all role-playing game fans should give it a shot.
4. Shadow of the Ninja Reborn
I still can’t get over how much I enjoyed ‘Shadow of the Ninja Reborn.’ ININ Games has created something truly special here, as the pixel art graphics are nothing short of breathtaking.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
