My Top 10 Japanese Games of 2024
As we bid adieu to the year 2024 and all its gaming goodness, I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the most impressive and enjoyable titles from Japan. In this article, I’ll be sharing my top 10 list of Japanese games that made a significant impact on me throughout the year.
**10. Unicorn Overlord**
Despite controversy surrounding the English localization, Vanillaware’s masterpiece is an incredible game that shines in both visuals and gameplay. The tactical side of the RPG genre is always welcome, and this title did not disappoint.
**9. Shadow of the Ninja Reborn**
This pixel art remake is a flawless reimagining of an NES classic. With its technical improvements over the original and gorgeous visual style, it’s one of the best-looking games I’ve played in years.
**8. Ace Combat 7: Deluxe Edition**
I never thought I’d be playing Ace Combat on my Switch, but this Deluxe Edition has made that a reality. The game runs smoothly, and having this option is incredibly convenient.
**7. Metaphor: ReFantazio (Honorable Mention)**
While it didn’t quite make the cut for my top 10, I do want to give an honorable mention to Metaphor: ReFantazio. Its inclusion on this list would have been well-deserved if not for some minor issues.
**6. Dragon Quest Builders**
The long-awaited PC port of this game is a welcome addition, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite surpass my enjoyment of the PlayStation 4 and Switch versions. Still, having this option available comes as a relief, especially with some quality-of-life improvements.
**5. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (Not Included)**
I know what you’re thinking – why isn’t this DLC included? The reason is simple: it’s an expansion, not a full-fledged game. I’ll have to reserve judgment until we get more substantial content.
**4. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake**
Square Enix has truly outdone themselves with the remake of this classic title. Not only does it look adorable in its new tilt-shift HD-2D art style, but the gameplay itself is also superb. I cannot recommend this game enough for any RPG fan.
**3. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom**
It’s been too long since we’ve seen Princess Zelda take center stage.
