South Korea plane’s final moments captured on video before hitting concrete barrier, triggering explosion
A harrowing video has emerged, capturing the final moments of a South Korean passenger plane as it skidded off the runway and crashed into a concrete barrier, triggering an explosive fire that claimed the lives of 179 people on board.
The footage shows the Jeju Air flight, which had departed from Bangkok earlier that day, approaching the runway at Muan International Airport before veering off course. The video captures the plane’s erratic movement as it failed to come to a stop, eventually striking a concrete barrier and bursting into flames.
The crash occurred on Sunday at approximately 9:03 a.m. local time, with only two crew members managing to escape the inferno. The cause of the disaster is still under investigation, with officials from the Transport Ministry announcing that they will be examining flight data and cockpit voice recorders in an effort to determine what went wrong.
Preliminary findings suggest that the plane may have been traveling at an excessive speed as it attempted to land, leading to its catastrophic failure. “I think that’s pretty much what spelled disaster for that airplane,” said Kyle Bailey, a former FAA safety team representative in the U.S., who reviewed the footage and shared his analysis with Fox News.
The investigation is ongoing, but officials have ruled out bird strikes as a possible cause, despite an earlier warning to the pilot about potential avian interference. The Transport Ministry has stated that the airport control tower had issued a bird strike warning shortly before the plane intended to land, advising the pilot to redirect its approach.
The wreckage of the plane was largely destroyed in the fire, with only the tail assembly remaining intact among the smoldering remains.
