Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has accused Russia of engaging in a “cover-up” over the deadly Christmas Day plane crash, stating that the flight was intentionally shot down.
Aliyev made the allegations during an interview with state television on Sunday, claiming that Azerbaijan Airlines Flight J2-8243 had been brought down by Russian air defenses. The president’s comments come as the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
According to reports, the plane crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan, killing at least 38 people. The crash occurred while the flight was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, to Grozny in Russia’s North Caucasus region.
Surviving passengers have reported hearing loud bangs before the plane went down, with one passenger stating that they had begun reciting prayers and preparing for the end after a particularly violent explosion. Another passenger described the aircraft as “drunk” after the incident.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and speculation over its cause, with many pointing to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a potential factor.
