Eyewitnesses to the devastating plane crash at Muan International Airport in South Korea have recounted sparks coming from the aircraft’s right wing and a possible bird strike moments before the incident.
Rental house owner Yoo Jae-hwan said he witnessed a spark on the plane’s right wing as it approached the runway, according to Yonhap News Agency. He told the outlet that he initially alerted his family to potential issues with the plane, stating “there was a problem with the plane” before the explosion.
Another witness, Cho, described seeing the aircraft descending towards the runway before noticing a flash of light and subsequent loud bangs followed by smoke. The witness further explained that there were multiple explosions audible after the crash.
A third eyewitness, Kim Yong-cheol, claimed to have heard metallic scraping sounds twice around five minutes prior to the incident. He also stated that he observed the plane attempting to land before failing and ascending again, followed by a loud explosion and black smoke billowing from the sky.
Meanwhile, a 50-year-old fisherman, identified as Jung, reported witnessing a flock of birds colliding with the aircraft’s right engine. According to his account, this led to a fire in the engine area, preceded by two or three distinct bangs as if the birds had been sucked into the engine.
The incidents have led authorities to speculate about the potential causes of the crash, although an official investigation is still ongoing.
