The New England Patriots have suffered a crushing 40-7 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers, with fans in attendance at Gillette Stadium calling for head coach Jerod Mayo’s dismissal during the humiliating loss.
As the team fell to an abysmal 3-13 record this season, disgruntled supporters took to the stands to express their displeasure, loudly chanting “Fire Mayo” throughout the game. This latest defeat marks a low point in the franchise’s history, with some fans seemingly at a loss for how much more of this underperformance they can stomach.
While the onus is naturally placed upon the coach and his staff, it appears that even some players are starting to question the organization’s direction. Speaking after the game, Deatrich Wise Jr., who has been with the Patriots since 2017, expressed a measure of support for Mayo, suggesting that he believes in the first-year coach’s long-term potential.
“You can’t expect us to be winning a Super Bowl this year,” Wise explained. “The guy’s in his first season. It’s not going to be golden.”
On the other side, Davon Godchaux was more forthright in his assessment of the team’s overall performance. “Everybody plays a part in this,” he emphasized. “It isn’t just Jerod Mayo. Players, coaches, front office – we just have to get better as a whole organization.”
Despite these sentiments from some within the locker room, it remains unclear how much longer the team will be able to tolerate such an abysmal performance before drastic changes are made at the top of the coaching staff.
