Samsung’s much-anticipated Galaxy S25 Ultra is shaping up to be a major letdown for photography enthusiasts. According to the latest leak, it appears that the device will not see any substantial camera upgrades over its predecessor, the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
As reported by Assemble Debug, internal files have been leaked which detail the camera specifications of the upcoming flagship. And unfortunately, they suggest that most of the sensors used in the new phone are identical to those found in the previous model. The only change being the addition of a 50-megapixel ISOCELL JN3 Ultra-Wide sensor.
This news is likely to be met with disappointment by fans of the series who were hoping for significant advancements in the camera department. While it’s true that the new ultra-wide module is an upgrade, it’s hard not to feel underwhelmed when compared to what other manufacturers are offering.
The inclusion of this higher-resolution sensor does bring some positives, however. It would allow for more detailed wide-angle photos and, crucially, 8K video recording capabilities from the Ultra-Wide camera. No word yet on whether Samsung will offer this option to users or not.
Additionally, the new ultra-wide lens is said to have a brighter aperture of F/1.9, capable of capturing 34% more light than its predecessor. This could result in a noticeable improvement in low-light performance, which was an issue with the Galaxy S24 Ultra as Dxomark found during testing.
It’s difficult not to feel let down by this news. Samsung has consistently pushed innovation in their camera technology and it’s surprising that they wouldn’t attempt to make some significant changes at this point in the series.
While we still don’t have a concrete release date for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, reports suggest it will be revealed at Samsung’s upcoming launch event in January 2025. Here’s hoping that the company will surprise us with some impressive AI-based camera features to make up for these hardware shortcomings.
