China is embarking on its largest military buildup since the 1930s era of Nazi Germany, a leading defense expert has warned, as a new Pentagon report reveals the country’s aggressive expansion and modernization of its military capabilities.
The report, which was released by the US Department of Defense (DoD), highlights China’s relentless efforts to expand its global influence and dominate the Indo-Pacific region. According to the report, China is rapidly increasing its naval fleet, developing hypersonic missiles that can evade US defenses, and engaging in an unprecedented military buildup since the 1930s era of Nazi Germany.
The Pentagon assessment concludes that China is determined to surpass the United States as a global military power, with the PLA seeking to “seize information dominance on the battlefield” through its cognitive domain operations (CDO) strategy. The goal of CDO, according to the report, is to achieve “mind dominance,” which involves using information to influence public opinion and affect change in other countries’ social systems.
China’s military expansion is not limited to the development of new technologies. The DoD report also reveals that China has been aggressively expanding its naval fleet, with plans to increase its total number of ships and submarines from 370 to 435 by 2030. This would make it the largest navy in the world, surpassing even the US.
The Pentagon’s assessment is starkly at odds with China’s official statements on its military intentions. Chinese officials have consistently denied allegations that they are seeking global dominance or developing new technologies specifically designed to counter US capabilities.
However, experts have long warned of China’s ambitions and its rapid expansion across multiple domains. The latest report from the DoD only serves to underscore these warnings.
“It is a red flag,” said Dr. Michael Pillsbury, a leading defense expert and former senior director for Asian Affairs at the White House National Security Council. “China is not just expanding its military capabilities; they are fundamentally reshaping the global strategic landscape.”
Pillsbury emphasized that China’s efforts to develop hypersonic missiles capable of evading US defenses pose an unprecedented threat to national security.
“Those weapons will allow them to strike anywhere on the planet without warning,” Pillsbury warned. “We need to take this report very seriously and consider all options for countering China’s military expansion.”
The DoD assessment highlights a new era of competition between the United States and China, with Beijing seeking to surpass Washington as a global power. The Pentagon’s findings are expected to inform US policy on China in the years to come.
China’s President Xi Jinping has consistently emphasized his vision of a “Chinese Century,” which envisions the country emerging as a dominant world power by 2049.
