Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has accused Russia of engaging in a “cover-up” following the deadly plane crash that occurred on Christmas Day. According to reports, Aliyev stated that the Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190-passenger jet was intentionally shot down by Russian air defenses.
During an interview with state television, Aliyev criticized Russia’s response to the incident, labeling it as “absurd.” He alleged that there were clear attempts by Moscow to conceal the truth surrounding the crash.
The Azerbaijani leader also spoke about his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that they discussed the matter over a phone call. The details of their conversation remain undisclosed at this time.
The incident occurred on December 25 and resulted in the loss of at least 38 lives. Surviving passengers have come forward to describe hearing loud bangs before the aircraft crashed.
Subhonkul Rakhimov, one of the passengers on board Flight J2-8243, revealed that he initially thought the plane was going to disintegrate after experiencing a strong impact. The individual stated that the plane’s behavior changed dramatically following the incident.
Another passenger, Vafa Shabanova, corroborated Rakhimov’s account, claiming that there were two explosions in the sky before the crash occurred approximately an hour and a half later.
The plane was traveling from Baku to Grozny when it went down.
