Democratic Lawmaker Slams Party for Being Stuck in ‘Old Ways’ After AOC’s Oversight Committee Loss
Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) has criticized the Democratic Party for being resistant to change and sticking with its “old ways” after the surprise defeat of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in her bid for chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee.
In a statement made during an MSNBC appearance, Connolly argued that switching up leadership more frequently would be beneficial for the party, saying, “I think that within the caucus we will have conversations about how we do leadership, because on the Republican side, they have term limits and so you can’t sit in those posts very long, so they end up shipping out their leadership a lot more frequently than we do on the Democratic side.”
This comes after Ocasio-Cortez was defeated by Rep. Connolly for the Oversight Committee chairmanship, leading to widespread criticism from liberal media figures, including MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and CNN’s Sunny Hostin.
Hayes expressed his disbelief at the outcome, stating that the decision “feels like a moment of genuine madness.” Hostin echoed this sentiment, praising Ocasio-Cortez for her progressive policies, which she believes should be popular among all Americans.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) also criticized the party for its lack of progress, saying in a statement that the loss was “disappointing” and that it showed the need for change within the Democratic Party.
It remains to be seen whether these criticisms will lead to any significant changes within the party.
