As a film enthusiast and avid IMAX fan, I can attest to the visceral impact of an immersive cinematic experience. Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sabir, the driving force behind the IMAX Vanguard community, who has managed to create a global online fan group that is dedicated to celebrating all things IMAX.
Sabir’s passion for IMAX began years ago when he first experienced the technology firsthand. He recalls feeling overwhelmed by the sheer scale and immersive quality of an IMAX film, saying “When you walk through those doors and you see that massive screen: if it’s your first time, you’re just taken away completely. I’m always there early to take pictures. I’m always hearing people going, ‘Wow, what is this? This is insane!’ Like, they’ve never ever seen anything like it.”
For Sabir, the thrill of watching an IMAX film extends beyond just the visual and auditory experience itself. It’s about being part of a shared community that can’t be replicated at home. “I don’t think people realize how much you miss human interaction when you watch something on your phone or laptop,” he says. “When I first got into this, it was like nothing else. It’s no surprise then that Sabir has managed to persuade the British Film Institute (BFI) to host special screenings for the community. In fact, he was able to convince them to put on a double bill of Blade Runner and Blade Runner: 2049, specifically for a terminally ill member of the community who had always wanted to see these films in IMAX.
Sabir’s love of IMAX has also led him to organize special screenings and events that showcase the format in all its glory. His ultimate goal is to host an annual festival where fans can come together to celebrate their shared passion for IMAX. It’s a testament to his dedication and commitment to spreading the word about the power of immersive cinema.
In a world where streaming services have become increasingly popular, Sabir’s efforts serve as a reminder that there is still something special to be gained from attending a film screening in person.
