President-elect Donald Trump is being asked to intervene in the ongoing House Republican leadership battle, with some lawmakers warning that a protracted fight for the speakership could delay the certification of the 2024 presidential election. The call comes amid growing concerns that the internal GOP squabble may prevent the House from swearing in new members, forming committees and ultimately certifying the results of the recent poll.
According to Chad Pergram, Fox News senior congressional correspondent, the current impasse “paralyzes” the House, preventing them from undertaking crucial tasks such as recognizing newly elected lawmakers and establishing committee structures. If this situation persists until January 6, it may even prompt Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley to temporarily take control.
James Comer, a top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, has urged Trump to use his influence to settle the matter. “I strongly encourage Donald Trump to get on the phone with those five or six members who won’t commit to voting for Mike Johnson,” he said in an interview. “All this is going to do is delay us.”
Comer emphasized that such a prolonged impasse would have far-reaching consequences, including potentially delaying the certification of the president-elect’s election and hindering Trump’s first 100 days in office.
As the tension builds, Comer stressed the importance of unity among Republicans, stating, “I strongly encourage President Trump to get on the phone and try to get everyone united so we can work together as a team and make America great again.”
