Nine million workers are getting a raise on January 1. Here’s where.
As the new year approaches, millions of low-wage earners across the United States can look forward to a pay increase starting January 1. According to recent data, over 9 million workers will see their salaries grow as a result of state laws and inflation adjustments.
The majority of these raises are taking place in 21 states, with 13 states increasing their minimum wages due to laws that index the rate to inflation. Meanwhile, legislation has spurred wage gains in six states, while two states have seen changes implemented through ballot measures.
It’s estimated that nearly one-fifth (20%) of the impacted workers reside in households below the poverty line, while almost half (49%) of those affected have family incomes below twice the federal poverty level. This significant increase is a vital step towards ensuring these workers can maintain an adequate standard of living.
States with increases going into effect on January 1 include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, and Washington.
