Title: US Treasury Department Admits It Got Hacked by China
The US Treasury Department has admitted that it was breached by hackers, specifically the Chinese-based group Salt Typhoon. The revelation comes as a major security breach, with officials warning that the impact of the hack may be even more significant than initially thought.
According to House officials, the Treasury Department’s systems were compromised in an unprecedented cyberattack. This incident is particularly concerning due to the sensitivity and critical nature of the information stored on these systems.
Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology, expressed concern over the lack of basic cybersecurity practices at private companies that own and operate critical infrastructure. “We wouldn’t leave our homes, our offices, unlocked,” she emphasized, “and yet our critical infrastructure—the private companies owning and operating our critical infrastructure—often do not have the basic cybersecurity practices in place that would make our infrastructure riskier, costlier, and harder for countries and criminals to attack.”
Despite the Treasury Department’s admission, officials have declined to confirm whether the Salt Typhoon group was specifically involved. The Treasury has stated that it will provide more details about the incident in its 30-day supplemental notification report.
Hunter Strategy’s Williams predicted that the scope of the breach may be even larger than initially reported, potentially exposing sensitive information and posing a significant risk to national security.
