Google Warns of Potential Security Risks in Chrome Browser Extensions
In a recent warning, the Chrome security team emphasized the importance of vigilance when it comes to browser extensions. The team highlighted that the majority of users have been warned against installing suspicious extensions, with less than 1% of all installs from the Chrome Web Store found to include malware.
As part of its effort to ensure user safety, Google’s Chrome security team conducts an automated review and manual analysis for every Chrome extension before it is made available in the store. This includes AI-powered machine-learning systems analyzing the code and human reviewers examining images, descriptions, and public policies attached to each extension.
However, even with these measures in place, some malicious extensions can still slip through the cracks. In 2024, Google reported that less than 1% of all Chrome installs from the store included malware. Despite this, Google continues to monitor published extensions and work with external security researchers to identify potential threats.
Google’s Chrome team also emphasized the importance of regular reviews of installed extensions and enabling Safe Browsing for enhanced protection.
