Philips has taken its palm recognition smart lock to the next level by adding video monitoring capabilities. The new feature is set to be showcased at CES 2025 and is sure to generate a lot of buzz in the tech community.
As it stands, Philips already offers a palm-recognition smart lock, but the addition of video surveillance takes the product to another level. This means that users will no longer need to have a separate smart camera to see who’s at the door, as they’ll be able to do so directly through the app.
The integration of these two features should provide for quicker response times and easier management, all within a single interface. Palm vein recognition is currently considered cutting-edge in the world of smart door access, allowing users to open their doors without physically touching the lock. This technology uses sensors to analyze the veins in your hand in much the same way that fingerprint readers use sensors to analyze fingerprints. However, it does not require physical contact and thus offers a more sanitary option for post-pandemic times.
The new smart lock will also support multiple entry methods, including PIN codes, smartphone app control, voice commands via Google Home or Amazon Alexa assistants, and even traditional keys. And, as an added bonus, the device will double up as a doorbell.
No pricing details have been released for the product yet, but it’s expected to be available in the second half of 2025. One thing that is not clear at this point is whether or not the lock will require a wired power connection or rely on batteries.
