Trump’s Former FCC Head Ajit Pai Asks Supreme Court to Uphold TikTok Ban
In a move that may surprise no one, Trump’s former head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Ajit Pai, has asked the Supreme Court to uphold his previous decision to ban TikTok.
The request comes as part of an ongoing legal battle between the Chinese-owned social media app and the US government. TikTok, which has over a billion active users worldwide, was previously banned by Pai in 2020 due to concerns about its potential national security risks.
In a statement, Pai said that he believes his original decision was “eminently reasonable” and that the courts should uphold it.
“We must protect our nation from any threats, real or perceived,” Pai said. “I believe my previous decision was based on solid evidence and I urge the Supreme Court to reject TikTok’s appeal.”
TikTok has vehemently denied any national security risks, stating that the app is a harmless platform for creative expression and entertainment.
Pai’s request has sparked outrage among many in the tech industry who have criticized his handling of net neutrality and the FCC’s lack of action on issues such as 5G spectrum allocation.
The Supreme Court will likely review Pai’s request in the coming months.
