China has rejected allegations from the United States that a Chinese state-sponsored actor was behind a hacking incident targeting the US Treasury Department’s employee workstations. The Treasury Department had previously stated that a breach occurred, and they attributed it to a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor.
According to reports, BeyondTrust, the company responsible for providing access software and other cybersecurity products, had identified the security incident in its Remote Support product on December 2. Following this discovery, the firm took swift action by revoking the compromised API key and notifying affected customers. Additionally, BeyondTrust is collaborating with law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity experts to further investigate the breach.
The Chinese government has strongly denied any involvement in the hacking incident, calling the US Treasury Department’s allegations “baseless smear attacks.” In a statement provided to Reuters, China emphasized that there is no evidence indicating that the threat actor has continued access to Treasury systems or information.
