GOP Lawmaker Reveals Why He Changed His Vote to Support Mike Johnson in Heated House Speaker Vote
In a surprising twist, Congressman Ralph Norman of South Carolina has come forward to reveal the reasons behind his change of heart and subsequent support for Mike Johnson as the new House speaker.
According to an exclusive interview with Fox News, Norman initially voted against Johnson’s bid for the top spot due to concerns about the latter’s willingness to fight for former President Donald Trump’s agenda. However, after a private meeting with Johnson, Norman reportedly received assurances that the Louisiana Republican would prioritize the Trump administration’s policy goals.
“I said, ‘Mike, are you going to give us specific examples of fighting for the things we mentioned? Will you give us your word?’ He said, ‘Yes,'” Norman revealed in an interview. “I just didn’t come away with the feeling that the oomph or willingness to fight for Trump’s agenda was there,” he added, citing his initial reluctance to support Johnson.
Despite these reservations, Norman felt compelled to express his opposition through his vote, saying it was “the only way I had to let my voice be heard.”
The Congressman further emphasized the importance of a speaker who is committed to upholding conservative values and advancing Trump’s policy priorities. “I think now he understands the fact that no more suspension votes, where we allow more Democrat votes than Republicans — that’s what’s killing the country,” Norman stated.
“If we’re going to do the same thing over and over again as we have done for the last 14 months, we’re going to be in the same position. I’m just not willing to go along with that, and I didn’t,” he reiterated his stance.
In a remarkable turn of events, Norman’s initial opposition was swiftly followed by a change of heart, as he ultimately decided to back Johnson for the role.
