In light of these findings, experts are now reevaluating their previous theories about the Moon’s magnetic field. According to Dr. Benjamin Weiss, a NASA scientist, the new data supports the idea that the Moon did indeed have a persistent magnetic field.
Weiss emphasized that the lunar samples collected by Chang’e missions were crucial in determining this outcome. Unlike Apollo mission rocks, which are contaminated with iron particles that can affect their magnetic properties, the newer samples were not affected by these impurities.
The discovery has significant implications for our understanding of the Moon’s history and potential habitability. As Dr. Hoegner noted, it is possible that the Moon’s magnetic field played a critical role in preserving liquid water, which could have been present in some form on the lunar surface.
