Meta Ends Fact-Checking Program as Zuckerberg Vows to Restore Free Expression on Facebook, Instagram
In a shocking move, Meta has decided to end its fact-checking program, which was implemented in 2020 to combat misinformation on its platforms. The decision comes as the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg vows to restore free expression on Facebook and Instagram.
According to reports, the decision is part of an effort to “shift away from moderation” and focus more on promoting free speech and open communication. In a statement, Zuckerberg expressed his regret over allowing government pressure to dictate what content is allowed or removed on the platforms.
“We have a real opportunity now,” said Nick Clegg, Meta’s VP of Global Affairs, in an interview with Fox News Digital. “We do think it is a real opportunity to work with the Trump administration and to work on free expression at home.”
Clegg emphasized that while there are some issues that Meta will continue to moderate, such as posts relating to terrorism, illegal drugs, and child sexual exploitation, the company wants to focus more on fostering an open environment for users.
“We have a new administration coming in that is far from pressuring companies to censor and [is] a huge supporter of free expression,” Clegg said.
