Zuckerberg says he’s moving Meta moderators to Texas because California seems too ‘biased’
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company will be relocating its content moderation teams from California to Texas. This move is reportedly motivated by Zuckerberg’s assertion that California, where Meta’s headquarters are based, is too “biased” for the social media giant’s taste.
In a statement, Zuckerberg claimed that moving the moderators to Texas will help alleviate concerns about biased employees overly censoring content. He believes that this relocation will ultimately promote free expression and build trust with users.
“We’re going to move our trust and safety and content moderation teams out of California, and our US-based content review is going to be based in Texas,” Zuckerberg stated in a video about the changes. “As we work to promote free expression, I think that it will help us build trust to do this work in places where there’s less concern about the bias of our teams.”
This move comes on the heels of Meta’s decision to shift its independent fact-checking program in the US and replace it with an X-inspired Community Notes feature. The company has also removed restrictions on topics such as immigration and gender, while reinstating civic content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
It is worth noting that this relocation may have implications for employees working in Meta’s Texas-based offices. Specifically, these employees will be subject to bans on gender-affirming care for transgender minors and one of the country’s most stringent abortion laws.
The move by Meta follows a similar decision made by Elon Musk when he brought X and SpaceX to Texas, motivated in part by his opposition to California legislation intended to support LGBTQ+ students.
