Anthropic Reportedly in Talks to Raise $2 Billion at $60 Billion Valuation, Led by Lightspeed
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is reportedly in discussions to secure a massive $2 billion funding round, valuing the startup at a staggering $60 billion. The rumored deal would be led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and bring the company’s total raised capital to an astonishing $15.7 billion.
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, the proposed funding would mark another significant milestone in Anthropic’s journey as it continues to push the boundaries of AI technology. This latest round would also propel the startup to a valuation higher than any other U.S.-based company, after SpaceX and OpenAI, which respectively hold valuations of $130 billion and $75 billion.
The news comes amidst a flurry of activity in the AI space, as companies scramble to develop and scale their technologies amid growing demand for AI-powered solutions. This latest development underscores the industry’s insatiable appetite for capital, with some firms already having raised enormous sums in recent months.
In November, OpenAI secured a massive $6.6 billion funding round, while Elon Musk-backed xAI reportedly raised $6 billion just days later. Meanwhile, Anthropic itself had previously agreed to partner with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a deal worth $4 billion, which saw the company commit to making AWS its primary AI model training partner.
It is unclear at this time if the proposed funding round will come to fruition, but if successful, it would mark another significant development in the ongoing AI arms race.
