Samsung Updates Galaxy S24, S23, S22, S21—But S25 Will Be Different
Samsung has released the latest security update for its flagship devices, including the Galaxy S24, S23, S22, and S21. The update combines the latest Android fixes with Samsung-specific patches to address various vulnerabilities.
While this news may come as a relief to millions of Galaxy owners, it’s not all good news. For those eagerly awaiting the launch of the new Galaxy S25, disappointment awaits. This latest iteration marks a significant departure from previous updates, as Samsung is introducing seamless updates for the first time with its newest flagship.
Seamless updates will allow devices to download and install updates in the background, eliminating the need for lengthy reset procedures. Instead, users will simply need to restart their device to apply the new software. This shift brings Samsung more in line with Google’s Pixel series, which has offered seamless updates for years.
The update also includes the rollout of Android 15 through One UI 7, bringing a range of new security enhancements to the table. Some of these advancements come from Google, while others are exclusive to Samsung. The tech giant is clearly looking to close the gap with Apple in terms of security and privacy, while also leveraging its own Galaxy AI capabilities.
In terms of specific updates, January’s patch includes five critical fixes for Android’s core system, including a particularly severe vulnerability that could enable remote code execution without additional privileges. All other notable fixes are labeled as high severity, but still pose a risk if exploited before being patched.
While Samsung has not issued any critical updates of its own this month, it does caution that some security items included in the Android Security Update cannot be disclosed at this time, suggesting further notifications may be forthcoming.
The update will initially roll out to S24 devices running One UI 7 beta, with flagship models expected to follow shortly. The release timeline is likely to start with the S24, followed by other eligible devices. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the upcoming Galaxy S25 launch, scheduled for around January 22.
