Feds Investigate Tesla’s ‘Actual Smart Summon’ After Several Crashes
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into 2.56 million Tesla vehicles following reports of accidents involving the company’s “Actual Smart Summon” remote parking feature.
According to a recent report, Tesla released Actual Smart Summon in September as a software update that enables owners to command their vehicle to drive itself and park at their location using only cameras, without relying on ultrasonic sensors, which are no longer included in newer vehicles. This feature is an updated version of the previous “Smart Summon” technology.
The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received one complaint alleging that Actual Smart Summon resulted in a crash, and has reviewed at least three media reports of similar incidents. The investigation highlights four incidents where the vehicles failed to detect posts or parked vehicles, leading to accidents.
In addition, the report mentions 12 complaints from Smart Summon users who alleged crashes with similar typology, leaving drivers with little time to react and avoid a crash.
The recent development has raised concerns about the safety of Tesla’s innovative feature and its potential impact on road safety.
