After 13 years of imprisonment, Vybz Kartel, the legendary Jamaican dancehall artist, has finally regained his freedom. And it seems like he’s making up for lost time.
In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Kartel revealed that he had been working tirelessly behind bars to create new music and even came up with hits without anyone knowing about them. “I was in a situation where I didn’t have the opportunity to perform or release music publicly,” he explained. “But I used my time wisely, creating as much material as possible.”
Kartel’s dedication has clearly paid off, as his latest releases have been met with massive success and critical acclaim. But what’s even more impressive is that he managed to create such high-quality content while serving his sentence.
“I had a lot of downtime, so I was able to focus on my craft,” he said. “I made sure to keep my skills sharp and not let my artistry suffer.”
The dancehall kingpin has always been known for his unique style and innovative approach to the genre. However, many fans were left wondering how he managed to create such incredible music while locked away.
“Well, I’ll tell you,” Kartel revealed with a smile. “I used technology to my advantage. I had access to the internet, so I could communicate with producers and artists globally.”
He continued: “I’d send beats back and forth, work on lyrics, and even record demos using voice notes. It was tough at times, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to be creative despite the circumstances.”
Kartel’s new music has been met with widespread acclaim, with many praising his ability to adapt and evolve as an artist.
“I’ve grown so much as a musician during my time away,” he reflected. “I think that period allowed me to rediscover myself and find new inspiration.”
With his release from prison and newfound creative freedom, Kartel is looking to reclaim his throne as the king of dancehall.
