X Hires Former WSJ Editor And Bureau Chief To Lead News Group
X, formerly Twitter, has hired John Stoll, a former editor and Detroit bureau chief at The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), to lead its news group and partnership team. This appointment comes as the company aims to expand its news offerings on the platform.
In an interview with TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas, X Corp CEO Linda Yaccarino mentioned that she is excited about the opportunity for journalists on X to “explore their craft,” thrive, and make a great living. The executive was referring to how creators on X can earn money through its creator revenue share program, which rewards popular content that increases engagement.
Yaccarino emphasized during the keynote at CES 2025 that “the future of news is not legacy media.” She stated that this means that legacy media news has become almost like a fan service for catering to a niche audience to make a budget. Instead, she highlighted X’s desire to provide a platform where journalistic curiosity can return.
The CEO explained the vision as one where “the shift in the narrative is now in the user’s hand” and where change is inspired by what is allowed by “protected free speech and two-way conversation.”
