I found the first Matter smart fridge
As a smart home reporter, I’ve been tracking down some of the most innovative and exciting new products at CES 2025, and today’s discovery is particularly noteworthy. In a crowded show floor, I managed to find the first Matter-enabled appliance for the US market – Bosch’s 100 Series French Door Refrigerator.
This cutting-edge fridge is not only impressive in terms of its sleek design and advanced features but also as it marks a significant milestone in the world of smart home integration. As you may know, Matter is a revolutionary new standard designed to provide secure and seamless connectivity between devices in your home without relying on cloud connections.
The 100 Series French Door Refrigerator will be available for purchase in the US this spring, with an impressive retail price tag of $2,500. While this might be outside the budget of some consumers, it’s worth noting that Bosch is one of the first major appliance manufacturers to support the Matter standard.
What does this mean? In essence, you’ll be able to control and interact with your smart fridge using any Matter-compatible ecosystem, including Samsung SmartThings and Amazon Alexa. This means a whole new level of convenience and integration for those looking to build an intelligent home.
One of the standout features of this product is its ability to receive notifications from the device itself, which could alert you if you’ve left the door open, for example. Additionally, the Matter-enabled Bosch fridge will support energy reporting and management capabilities, allowing it to be part of a larger whole-home energy management system.
What’s also important to note is that while some may be disappointed by the lack of support for existing appliances, Lammertink, speaking on behalf of BSH (which owns Bosch), made it clear that they won’t be updating their older products to Matter. The decision not to do so was attributed to concerns about potentially bricking these devices.
The availability of this product in the US market is a significant step forward for the industry and will undoubtedly open up new possibilities for smart home enthusiasts.
