Surprise Google Chrome 131 Update For Windows, Mac, Linux, Android
Google has announced an emergency update for the Chrome web browser across all platforms except iOS. The move comes in response to a high-rated security issue that has been confirmed and is considered a type confusion vulnerability.
The latest Chrome update brings the browser’s version number up to 131.0.6778.264/.265 on Windows, Mac and Linux devices, while Android users will receive version 131.0.6778.260. The company stated that it will automatically update the browser in due course, but it is highly recommended that users initiate the process themselves.
To do so, users should head to the Help|About option in their Google Chrome menu and start a security update download manually. It’s essential to restart the browser after the installation has been completed or the vulnerability will remain unpatched.
Google did not provide further details about the issue, citing the need for most users to have updated before releasing more information. However, it is known that the vulnerability affects the open-source V8 JavaScript engine that powers Chrome and other Chromium-based web browsers. This security flaw has been assigned a CVE identifier of 2025-0291.
The discoverer of the issue, known as Popax21, has been rewarded with a substantial bug bounty of $55,000 for bringing this vulnerability to light.
It’s crucial that users update their browser as soon as possible to protect themselves from potential exploitation. Google will roll out the update over the coming days and weeks, but it is advisable not to wait for the automatic update and instead initiate the process manually.
