Google and Microsoft donate $1 million apiece to Trump’s inauguration
In a move widely seen as a bid to curry favor with the incoming administration, tech giants Google and Microsoft have each donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund. This contribution brings the total amount pledged by major tech companies to $2 million.
According to reports, Google has stated that it will be supporting the inauguration “with a livestream on YouTube and a direct link on our homepage,” as well as with its financial donation. It is unclear whether this move is part of a larger strategy by the company to win over Trump, who has previously threatened to break up or shut down Google altogether.
Microsoft, which has also donated $1 million, had previously contributed $500,000 to Trump’s first inauguration and donated the same amount to President Joe Biden’s inauguration fund. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has reportedly met with Trump on multiple occasions and was involved in negotiations over acquiring TikTok in 2020, when Trump attempted to ban the app in the US.
The move by these tech companies comes as no surprise, given the increasing tensions between the industry and the government.
