Americans Flock to Capitol to Pay Respects to Former President Carter Ahead of Funeral: ‘Job Well Done’
Thousands of people traveled to Washington D.C. between Tuesday evening and Thursday morning to pay their respects to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024.
Despite the cold weather, visitors lined up in large numbers outside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda to view his casket, which was lying in state. Many expressed their gratitude for Carter’s humanitarian work and dedication to public service.
Riley Cagle, a visitor from South Carolina, praised Carter’s commitment to social justice and equality. “I’m glad we didn’t have ‘make them like him back then either,’ added Cagle, referencing the current political climate.
Ted McConnell, an employee of former President Gerald Ford’s 1976 campaign, was also present at the Capitol. He appreciated all the humanitarian efforts carried out by Carter worldwide and considered it his “honor to honor him in his lying in state” on Wednesday.
Eric Stromayer told Fox News’ Chad Pergram that the lines were moving quickly and encouraged people who want to give a fitting farewell to the late president, come down and take advantage of the opportunity.
