Koichi Ohata Is Getting A Lovely New Artbook Later This Month
In a delightful announcement for anime and mecha fans, it has been confirmed that renowned artist and director Koichi Ohata will be releasing a brand-new artbook later this month. The book, titled “Art of Battle: Koichi Ohata Robot Chronicles,” promises to showcase the designer’s impressive portfolio, covering his work on various titles such as Gunbuster, Genocyber, Macross II, and M.D. Geist.
Ohata is particularly notable for his work on M.D. Geist, which, despite its controversy regarding animation quality, has gained a cult following for its over-the-top action sequences and setting. Furthermore, it’s undeniable that Ohata’s design work, especially the power armor at the end of the OVA, showcases his exceptional skill in creating visually stunning concepts.
In addition to M.D. Geist, the artbook will also delve into Ohata’s contributions to Macross II. It is worth noting that his VF-2SS and other mecha designs were actually based on Kazumi Fujita’s earlier work for Zeta Gundam. Nevertheless, this collection of his design work is still highly anticipated by fans.
If you’re unfamiliar with Ohata’s artwork, it typically features a sleek, organic feel, often incorporating chitinous elements. His style bears some resemblance to that of Yutaka Izubuchi, but the upcoming artbook will demonstrate just how versatile his work can be.
The “Art of Battle: Koichi Ohata Robot Chronicles” artbook is set for release in Japan on January 25 and will retail for approximately ¥4,180 (around $26 USD). Pre-orders are already available through Amazon Japan.
