Thai Authorities Seize 1,000 Bitcoin Mining Rigs in $3.2M Electricity Theft
In a significant operation, Thai authorities have seized nearly 1,000 Bitcoin mining rigs from a company accused of electricity theft worth approximately $3.2 million. The move highlights the growing concerns over illegal cryptocurrency activities and their impact on national economies.
According to reports, the operation was conducted in Chon Buri province on January 8, following an investigation by the Crime Suppression Division (CSD). Authorities uncovered modified electricity meters designed to siphon power from the national grid without incurring electricity costs. This brazen act of theft resulted in an estimated loss of $3.2 million.
During the early morning raid, authorities confiscated a staggering 996 Bitcoin mining rigs, four computers, three routers, and a tampered electric meter. An investigation also revealed that solar panels installed at the site were unrelated to the mining operations.
The seized equipment has been transferred to the CSD, while officials from the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) have filed complaints seeking prosecution for the company’s egregious actions.
