Blue Origin delays launch of New Glenn mega-rocket
Jeff Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, has delayed the inaugural launch of its first orbital rocket, New Glenn. The company made the decision after experiencing a problem with one of the vehicle’s subsystems. While delays are not uncommon in the spaceflight industry, this move once again puts into question the timing of the much-anticipated launch.
The issue arose during countdown procedures, forcing Blue Origin to cancel the launch at 1AM ET on January 13. According to Eric Berger, New Glenn is expected to require at least 48 hours to reset for launch. The company had previously pushed back the target date from January 12 to January 13 in an effort to increase the chances of successfully landing the rocket’s booster.
The primary goal of New Glenn’s first flight is reportedly “reach orbit safely,” with any additional achievements being seen as a bonus.
