7 Million OpenSea Addresses Leaked in 2022 Breach, SlowMist Confirms
The largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea, has been caught up in a major data breach that occurred in June 2022. According to recent reports from SlowMist, the breach led to the leak of an astonishing 7 million email addresses.
Initially, OpenSea had alerted its customers about the breach back in June 2022, stating that one of its employee’s emails had been compromised by a vendor named Customer.io, which is responsible for the company’s email automation. At the time, it was unclear just how much sensitive information had been exposed.
However, over two years later, SlowMist has confirmed that the breach led to the leak of an enormous amount of data, including 7 million email addresses. The leaked emails include those belonging to well-known individuals and firms within the crypto industry, as well as key opinion leaders (KOLs).
The implications of this massive leak are far-reaching and potentially devastating for affected users. With such a large amount of sensitive information now in the hands of attackers, the risk of phishing attacks and scams has significantly increased.
According to recent data from CertiK, phishing emerged as the most costly attack vector in 2024, resulting in losses of $1.05 million across 296 incidents. Furthermore, three specific instances saw losses exceeding $100 million, accounting for nearly half of the total stolen value that year and a staggering 39.1% of the overall incidents.
Phishing attacks are particularly insidious because they exploit human vulnerabilities rather than targeting technical systems directly. Scammers use deceitful emails, fake websites, or misleading messages to trick users into sharing sensitive information like passwords, private keys, or wallet addresses.
