Chinese Social Media App RedNote is the Number One App as TikTok Ban Looms
In a shocking turn of events, Chinese social media app RedNote has skyrocketed to the top of Apple’s App Store and Google Play rankings, amidst rumors that TikTok may be banned in the US. The sudden surge in popularity comes as many TikTok creators begin to fawn over RedNote, posting about their experiences with the platform.
The Chinese app, known locally as Xiaohongshu or “little red book,” is designed similarly to TikTok, featuring short-form videos that can be scrolled through vertically. While much of the interface remains in Chinese, helpful videos on TikTok have been posted explaining how to change the language setting to English, making it more accessible to international users.
With over 300 million existing users in China, RedNote has long been seen as a serious competitor to ByteDance’s Douyin and e-commerce giant Alibaba. The app’s popularity can be attributed to its vast user base, but also its TikTok-like features that have drawn in anxious TikTok fans seeking an alternative.
While it is unclear whether this sudden shift will last once the TikTok ban takes effect, one thing is certain: RedNote has solidified itself as a force to be reckoned with in the social media space.
