Chinese social media app RedNote is the number one app as TikTok ban looms
As the clock ticks down to a potential TikTok ban in the US, it appears that users are scrambling to find an alternative. According to reports, Chinese social media app RedNote has suddenly risen to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings and sits at 34th spot in Google’s Play Store.
The app, known as Xiaohongshu or “little red book” in Mandarin, bears a striking resemblance to TikTok in terms of its short-form video sharing capabilities. Many popular TikTok creators are now posting about their experiences with RedNote, effectively evangelizing the platform to their millions of followers. As a result, RedNote’s popularity has skyrocketed.
The app’s interface is predominantly in Chinese, making it difficult for some users to navigate. However, helpful videos on TikTok explaining how to change the language setting have made it more accessible. The app also features a similar vertical scrolling mechanism as TikTok, allowing users to quickly discover new content based on their interests.
While RedNote has been popular in China for years, its sudden rise to prominence can be attributed directly to the impending TikTok ban. With over 300 million active users, RedNote is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with in the social media landscape.
Other apps that have benefited from the situation include Lemon8, another ByteDance app, and Flip, an LA-based video-sharing platform.
