More than 7 million OpenSea users’ email addresses are at risk of phishing attacks after a massive data breach. This is according to SlowMist, a blockchain security firm, which highlighted the risk of hackers attempting to steal sensitive information from unsuspecting victims.
The incident occurred in 2022 when an employee of Customer.io, an email service provider used by OpenSea, exploited their access to user data and shared it with an external party. This has now come to light due to a recent disclosure that CZ, the founder of Binance, also had his email address compromised as part of this breach.
As the stolen data is more than three years old, it may seem surprising that it’s only now being reported. However, experts believe that the risk of a phishing attack has significantly increased since the leak, given the vast amount of sensitive information at stake.
The SlowMist leader emphasized that OpenSea users should take immediate action to secure their accounts by changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication for all their login credentials. This warning comes as no surprise, given the rise in cryptocurrency-related hacking incidents over the past year.
In January 2024, a massive phishing attack targeting cryptocurrency exchange customers resulted in losses exceeding $500 million and affected more than 330,000 users. The trend continues to this day, with recent reports indicating that hackers have gained access to official X-account profiles of well-known crypto companies, including Litecoin.
As a result, SlowMist advises OpenSea users to take proactive measures to protect their accounts from potential threats.
