Pixelfed, a decentralized platform aiming to rival Instagram’s dominance in the social media space, has finally launched its mobile apps for both iOS and Android devices. This move marks a significant milestone for the open-source platform, which promises to offer an ad-free experience and robust data protection for its users.
Since its inception in 2018, Pixelfed has been available only on the web or through third-party app clients. However, with the release of the mobile apps, the platform is now more accessible than ever, catering to a broader audience.
In a recent post on Mastodon, the creator of Pixelfed, Daniel Supernault, revealed that over 11,000 new users have joined the platform within the past 24 hours alone. This staggering growth is a testament to the community’s desire for a safer and more transparent social media experience.
As of now, Pixelfed has already accumulated over 78,000 posts on its platform, showcasing the massive potential it holds. Notably, Pixelfed operates on ActivityPub protocol, which is also utilized by other decentralized social networks such as Mastodon and Flipboard.
The launch comes at a time when many Instagram users are seeking alternatives due to recent controversies surrounding Meta-owned Instagram. The company’s decision to eliminate third-party fact-checking and revise its “Hateful Content” policy has raised concerns among some users, who feel that the platform no longer aligns with their values.
Moreover, some Instagram links to Pixelfed were initially blocked on Facebook, being treated as spam and deleted. However, Meta has since acknowledged this as an error and promised to reinstate those posts.
Pixelfed’s commitment to protecting its user data and offering a seamless experience sans ads has garnered significant attention in the social media space. With its new mobile apps, the platform is poised to become a serious competitor to Instagram.
