New Amazon Ransomware Attack—‘Recovery Impossible’ Without Payment
A new wave of ransomware attacks has hit Amazon Web Services (AWS), with the attackers demanding payment to restore access to compromised data. According to reports, the cybercriminals behind this “recovery impossible” attack are refusing to provide a decryption key unless the affected parties pay the demanded ransom.
In response to this incident, cybersecurity experts have emphasized that paying ransoms to cybercriminals only perpetuates the cycle of crime and offers no guarantee of resolution. Instead, they recommend relying on industry initiatives like the Kaspersky No Ransom initiative, which aims to provide victims with free decryption tools.
However, in high-stakes scenarios where paying the ransom is deemed the only viable option, Michels stressed that government safeguards are urgently needed to support victims who face no-win situations. Such measures could include financial assistance for recovery efforts, access to decryption tools, or even indemnities in cases where paying the ransom becomes a necessity.
Meanwhile, Jamie Akhtar, co-founder and CEO of CyberSmart, warned that simply banning ransom payments will not solve the issue. He emphasized that organizations must have cybersecurity measures in place – such as regular backups and properly siloed data – to recover quickly without having to pay the ransom.
Mike Kiser, director of strategy and standards at SailPoint, also expressed a clear stance on the matter: “Ransom payments should be banned.”
Amazon has responded to the incident by emphasizing its shared responsibility model with customers. The company encourages all clients to follow security best practices and provide support for any questions or concerns about account security.
In light of this latest attack, it is imperative that governments and companies alike work together to develop effective strategies against ransomware attacks.
