Hinge’s new AI feature determines if your prompt response is too basic
In a move aimed at improving the online dating experience, Hinge has announced the launch of a new AI-powered feature designed to help users craft more engaging and authentic profiles. Dubbed “Prompt Feedback,” this innovative tool utilizes OpenAI’s GPT-4o mini to evaluate the responses provided by users when answering prompts.
The AI technology assesses each response, providing personalized feedback in the form of three levels of guidance: “Go a Little Deeper,” “Try a Small Change,” or “Great Answer.” The latter, as its name suggests, indicates that the initial response is satisfactory and doesn’t require any adjustments. Conversely, the other two options offer more specific suggestions to enhance the original answer.
Hinge’s new feature tackles a persistent issue in online dating: the proliferation of generic, cliché responses on dating profiles. According to data from Hinge itself, 63% of users struggle with what to write on their profiles, often resorting to stereotypical answers that fail to accurately reflect their personalities.
The introduction of Prompt Feedback aims to address this problem by empowering users with the tools they need to create authentic and compelling profiles. By leveraging AI-driven insights, Hinge hopes to improve the overall experience for its users, who have reported feeling burnt out from endless swiping, unproductive conversations, and frequent ghosting.
As part of a larger effort to invest in AI technology, Hinge’s parent company Match Group has committed approximately $20 million to $30 million towards developing innovative AI-driven tools. This investment follows the development of an AI-powered photo selector tool for Tinder, which was announced last year.
While some users may be skeptical about the role AI plays in facilitating connections, it is clear that Hinge and other dating platforms are determined to provide more effective ways for people to connect online.
