Spanish Fury Over Bid to Stop Brits Buying Holiday Homes
Politicians in Spain have expressed outrage over a proposal that would impose a 100% tax on British citizens buying holiday homes, labeling it “xenophobic” and vowing not to enforce such an unfair measure. The plan has been met with widespread criticism from both the government and opposition parties.
The Spanish parliament is scheduled to vote on the bill, which would drastically increase taxes for foreign property buyers in a move deemed unnecessary by many. Critics argue that the tax hike is nothing more than a desperate attempt to discourage tourism and curb the country’s growing housing market issues.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has spoken out against the proposal, calling it “unacceptable” and stating that his government would refuse to implement such a measure if passed. Other politicians have also weighed in, with some even suggesting they would boycott the vote entirely.
Estate agents, too, have dismissed the idea as “silly,” stating that it will only serve to further deter foreign investors and drive down property values.
